STOP GIVING BILLIONS
TO POLLUTERS

Government, stop giving billions in subsidies to the fossil fuel industry and major polluters. Invest in climate policy instead

SIGN THE PETITION

It is now or never

We’re in a climate and ecological crisis that threatens the very survival of our world. Our politicians however continue to support fossil fuel industries. This cannot continue!

We, concerned citizens that want a safe future for ourselves, our children and grandchildren,

observe that our government invests billions annually into polluting companies and the fossil fuel industry,

and demand that the government ceases these subsidies at once and sets up a citizens’ assembly for the climate that’s able to make effective climate policy, without being hindered by short-term interests and corporate lobby.

What we want

Science shows that if we continue business as usual, there is a chance the earth will have become largely uninhabitable by the end of this century. We have to do five times as much if we want to stay below 1.5 ° C warming from the Paris agreement. Therefore it’s unacceptable that the Dutch government spends €8.3 billion of our tax money to subsidize the fossil fuel industry. This cannot continue, we demand that these subsidies are stopped.

No more lobbying, listen to citizens
Instead of listening to the lobby of the fossil industry and other major polluters, it is time for our government to start listening to citizens to secure a livable future for us and our children. In order to do that, we need a citizens’ assembly for the climate: an effective way of making policy without being hindered by short-term interests and the corporate lobby. Does that work? Definitely, earlier this year, a citizens’ assembly in France made sure that the French government adopted extremely ambitious climate policies. We can do the same in the Netherlands.

This is what we're fighting for

Our demands

0. CLIMATE JUSTICE FOR ALL: We demand a just transition that centres the needs and voices of those on the environmental frontline and holds to account those most responsible for ecological breakdown.*
1. Tell the truth about the climate and ecological crisis that threatens our existence and communicate the urgency for change.
2. Act now to halt biodiversity loss and reduce greenhouse gas emissions to net zero by 2025 in a just and fair manner.
3. Let citizens decide by establishing a Citizen’s Assembly which takes the lead on climate and ecological justice.

* We are in the process of implementing ‘Demand 0: Climate Justice for All’ in our movement. This summer, a national People’s Assembly organised by Extinction Rebellion supported implementing this demand. However, we recognize the mistakes XR has made on this topic in the past. That’s why in a ground-up process, we want to go through all local groups as well so we don’t only officialy implement this demand, but really integrate it. You can read more on demand 0 on demand0.nl.

Who we are

Extinction Rebellion is an international movement of people like you and me. The movement was founded in the UK in 2018 and now we’re active in 1050 locations in 62 countries. We’re growing fast. We carry out peaceful, non-violent, disruptive actions to pressure governments into protecting all life on this planet.
