Significant damage to the health of Rotterdam’s residents is caused by port activities. Coal-fired power plants and petrochemical companies are particularly responsible for pollution. The production of oil and plastic releases various toxic substances. According to the European Environment Agency, the five largest companies in the port cause an annual health damage of 2.7 billion euros to the local population (calculated in terms of lost years of life). Water, soil, and air are extensively polluted in Rotterdam. Since 2010, there hasn’t been much improvement in air quality; the port claims that the low-hanging fruit has already been addressed. (Source: FTM<\/a>) However, air pollution remains an invisible killer, leading to damage to our lungs, heart, and brain. The Lung Fund raises an alarm for clean air. Many toxic substances go unmeasured, and health risks (air pollution\/cancer) are systematically underestimated. There is insufficient awareness of the health impact. With greater awareness, the pressure for intervention would be much greater. Research conducted in Zeeland, an industrial area with minimal road traffic, revealed that babies born to mothers exposed to industrial air pollution in Zeeuws-Vlaanderen are on average 75 grams lighter. This is comparable to babies whose mothers smoked during pregnancy.
