Insulate Britain (IB) is een sociale beweging die door rebellen actief in XRUK opgestart is onafhankelijk van XR in het Verenigd Koninkrijk. De beweging is het meest bekend van het blokkeren van de M25-autosnelweg in het VK – IB heeft 17 dagen actie gevoerd, en 159 actiedeelnemers zijn in totaal 768 keer aangehouden.

De boodschap is wat IB betreft duidelijk – als er 1,5 huizen per minuut moeten worden gemoderniseerd om bijna alle huizen energie-efficient te krijgen, moet de overheid met een duidelijk plan komen. De eisen van IB zijn (vrij vertaald):

1 Dat de overheid van het VK onmiddellijk belooft om de isolatie van alle sociale woningen in Groot-Brittannië tegen 2025 volledig te financieren en er de verantwoordelijkheid voor te nemen;

2 Dat de regering van het Verenigd Koninkrijk onmiddellijk belooft om binnen vier maanden een wettelijk bindend nationaal plan op te stellen voor de volledige financiering en verantwoordelijkheid van de volledige energie- en koolstofarme renovatie van alle huizen in Groot-Brittannië tegen 2030, zonder externe kosten, als onderdeel van een rechtvaardige overgang naar het volledig koolstofvrij maken van alle delen van de samenleving en de economie.

De lezing zal ingaan op de tactieken en strategie achter de (controversiele) campagne van IB. De lezing is vooral gericht op mensen die actief zijn bij XR. De spreker is Nick Till (organizer bij IB) en de lezing zal in het Engels gehouden worden.

Insulate Britain (IB) is a social movement started in the UK. The founders and people active include rebels active in XRUK and are organizing independently of XR. The movement is best known for blocking the M25 motorway in the UK – IB has involved 17 days of action, and 159 action participants have been arrested a total of 768 times.

As far as IB is concerned, the message is clear – if 1.5 houses per minute need to be upgraded to make almost all houses energy efficient, the government needs to come up with a clear plan. IB’s demands are:

1 That the UK government immediately promises to fully fund and take responsibility for the insulation of all social housing in Britain by 2025;

2 That the UK government immediately promises to produce within four months a legally binding national plan to fully fund and take responsibility for the full low-energy and low-carbon whole-house retrofit, with no externalised costs, of all homes in Britain by 2030 as part of a just transition to full decarbonisation of all parts of society and the economy.

The talk will discuss the tactics and strategy behind IB’s (controversial) campaign. The talk is mostly aimed at people active with XR. The speaker is Nick Till (organizer with IB) and the talk will be in English.
