The world is on fire and the Dutch government refuses to take action. That is why Extinction Rebellion (XR) is escalating prior to the parliamentary elections with two major blockades; on the Afsluitdijk (Saturday 18 October) and on the A12 (Tuesday 28 October). With these blockades, XR addresses all political parties with two clear demands: stop fossil subsidies and stop new fossil fuels.
Just before the elections, Extinction Rebellion (XR) is increasing the pressure. Because politicians really have to get to work now, XR, together with scientists from Scientist Rebellion (SR), is blocking the Afsluitdijk and the A12 in a mass protest for life. They call on political parties to commit to a stop to new fossil projects and an end to all fossil subsidies.
XR spokesperson Cornelie van Kampenhout: "On Budget Day, it became clear once again that the government does not care about a liveable future: CO2 tax scrapped, tailor-made agreements collapsed and more money to polluting companies and cheap petrol. While climate damage in Europe already amounted to 43 billion euros this summer, the Netherlands spends a similar amount on fossil subsidies for rich major polluters. The climate goals are getting further and further out of sight and the climate crisis is escalating, yet outgoing minister Hermans (VVD) is casually announcing new gas drilling! This is unacceptable; Political parties must now take a radically different approach. For a liveable climate, the only option is to stop fossil subsidies and new fossil projects."
On Tuesday 28 October – one day before the parliamentary elections – Extinction Rebellion will block the A12 in The Hague. At the heart of our democracy, they demand: Stop fossil subsidies now! A12 spokesperson Tessa Halm: "Every year, the biggest polluters receive 39.7 to 46.4 billion euros in tax credits. That is dystopian. Last year was more than 1.6 degrees hotter compared to before the industrial age, the Paris climate goals are no longer achievable and the consequences of the climate crisis will become unaffordable for society in the coming years. And don't get me started on the effects of the climate crisis in the Global South. Thousands are dying there from the consequences of the climate crisis. Harvests fail due to drought or extreme rainfall and famine fuel wars. Enough is enough!"
