Heat waves, climate refugees, floods, food shortages: the climate is heating up and the consequences are already being felt. Vulnerable countries, natural areas and people, anyway animals, biodiversity and ecosystems are suffering daily under conditions directly linked to dangerous climate disruption. And so we sound the alarm. Over and over again!
Every first Monday of the month, the air alert is tested at noon. That alarm stands for "a warning of dangerous situations. That's exactly why we organize a die-in these Mondays.
AMSTERDAM CLIMATE ALARM
JOIN THE DIE-IN
ON JUNE 5, 11:45 AM GATHER AT THE STOPERA, IN FRONT OF THE AMSTELHOECK
WHAT: A peaceful short climate action, friendly to the public. At 12:00 exactly when the siren sounds, we sound the alarm by lying dead silent. For several minutes, we lie still, as if we have just fallen down because there is no more oxygen. With only flapping XR flags giving some movement. Once the alarm ends, a speech begins. In this case, Niels will give an inspired speech. Niels is ready when he shouts, WHAT DO WE WANT? We stand up as one and answer: CLIMATE JUSTICE!!!! Die-in ends with this. A quick chat (in the so-called "check-out") afterwards.
WHERE: in front of Amsterdam City Hall, Amstel 1 (or: the Stopera on the Amstel side). That's where mayor, aldermen and city officials work who we want to reach in the first place. But there is also a lot of running and audience!
WHEN: Monday, June 5, 2023. Gather between 11:45 and 11:50 at Amstel 1, in front of the city office. Short briefing/check-in between 11:50 and 11:55. A little before 12:00 we will lie down, for example in the form of the XR sand runner. Around 12:15-12:30 we finish.
WHY: All this may seem like a pinprick - and it may be - but this action is very accessible to a lot of people. Besides: lots of pinpricks in the same place hurt like hell at some point.
DON'T FORGET TO BRING: Flags, banners, signs with your slogans, possibly flyers for the public. The more photogenic and obvious it is, who we are and most importantly, why we are there, the better!
The more people lying for dead in front of City Hall, the more impressive!
GOOD TO KNOW:
This monthly Monday die-in takes place in many more cities!!! We are part of a much bigger picture and that's pretty cool!
The action has been registered with the municipality/police and is low-risk.
The intention is to keep doing this, every first Monday of the month, until it is, well, no longer needed.
