Nonviolent Communication brings core value to life

Nonviolence as a core value is the basis of all XR actions. This is the only way XR wants to achieve system change. At the same time, it can be an enormous task: upholding the principle of non-violence in a world full of conflict! Each time it requires extra awareness and specific choices, which are not always easy to make, especially if you have been affected yourself. It is not pleasant but also important to be encouraged and supported in this.

What is nonviolent communication?

Nonviolent Communication (NVC) is a philosophy that promotes peace and helps resolve conflicts. It can be about making peace between the different voices within yourself, between those in a group, in a country or, for example, worldwide. Nonviolent Communication, also called connecting communication or Nonviolent Communication, was developed by the American psychologist Marshall Rosenberg.

The intention of his ideas is human connection. This is created by being empathetic, i.e. by ensuring that you and others feel truly seen, heard and accepted. In this way, NVC tries to meet - perhaps the most essential - human need. Rosenberg discovered that certain language use hinders the connection between people, while other language use promotes that connection. He developed a model with four steps. In all its simplicity, it is a model with a lot of depth. The four steps help us to communicate from the heart and thus create connection.

What is the workshop about?

In the workshop we provide an introduction to NVC. Using simple exercises and examples, you will experience what nonviolent communication is and can mean. We can also jointly investigate cases from your practice to see how empathy can shine a new light on the situation and provide new perspectives for action.
